There’s been a long history of streetwear brands having a bit of fun at the expense of established luxury fashion brands (contravening the notion that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery), but a simple T-shirt from New York’s Reason Clothing has resulted in the dissolution of a longstanding business relationship between a retailer and one of those aforementioned luxury labels. Yesterday, Sarah Andelman, the creative director and a part owner of colette, reported that Saint Laurent was severing ties with her influential Paris store — a partnership that dated back to 1998. Furthermore, Andelman was not invited to view the Spring 2014 Saint Laurent collection by designer Hedi Slimane, and colette’s orders from that collection — totaling $285,738 at current exchange rates – were summarily canceled. All because the store had sold about 300 of Reason’s ”Ain’t Laurent Without Yves” tee. The winner here has to be Reason Clothing, who gets a good amount of free press and notoriety, both of which are always at a premium in the fashion world.
